Republicans and Barack Obama
Reuter's report from Washington some days back, published in most of our dailies, dwelt upon the sour warning to US President Obama, because of the reverse suffered by the Democrats in the mid-term election. Naturally it will make the president's task more difficult and laborious in an already depressing economic and employment situation, which was not of his making, but a legacy of the past administration.
However, the report also states that Obama's predicament, though difficult, is not impossible. They cited the past examples of Bill Clinton and Ronald Regan. Both presidents suffered mid-term election reverses; both were reelected for the second term!
Unfortunately in Obama's case, there is one important factor working against him, which no one mentions, yet it rules the inner mind of most Americans, like it or not! It is the fact that Obama is 'black', while the other two were 'whites'; which could be a liability that will remain unstated! Much will however depend on the economy, if it shows rapid growth, it will be a help.
Also the war in Afghanistan is another important issue. After all is said and done, the Republicans need a war; if not in Iraq then Iran will do. This is an inner unmentioned desire of the big industrial cartels whose owners invariably are 'closet republicans,' whatever may be their public opinion. This may play a deciding role in the next election for the US President.
