Army housing scheme
Recently B.B.C. had released in several instalments under the heading "Sena Banijja ', a report on business ventures undertaken by Bangladesh Army and other Services. The Defence Services had entered into manufacturing, five-star hotels, commercial buildings, shipyards, machine tool factory, bank etc. In fact, our Defence Services have become a major business conglomerate supported by taxpayers' money.
Now their latest venture is the Army Housing Scheme at Rupganj. It will be a housing estate on 13000 bigha land and the project area will include water bodies and flood flow zones where multi-storied building are not allowed. The amazing part is, the AHS is going ahead without clearance from Rajuk and Ministry of Works, which are mandatory. Does the army consider itself above the law and expects that the laws of the land will be bent to accommodate them? Once it is done the DAP, which was finalised for protection of Dhaka city with so much of study and research, will become a joke and it will open the floodgate to land pirates.
One hopes that good sense will prevail and the Army will proceed within the framework of law and public interest,
