Two contrasting images

People who had no right to even look at the house in which Aung San Suu Kyi was detained now can look at the beaming smile of their leader. Her release ended all the unending hours of waiting, repressed desire for freedom and doubt about her release. Though she looked a bit aged, she appeared fit and composed. Intelligent and focused, she utilised her time in detention by learning different languages. Her perseverance to utilize her prolonged time of detention positively, always nurturing a golden goal in her mind, is remarkable. Thus she has become the symbol of endurance and an indomitable voice of democracy in the face of persecution. When we were feasting our eyes on the delectable scene of Suu Kyi's release, another story was unfolding here in our country. The opposition leader, Begum Khaleda Zia, was being dragged out of her house where she had lived for nearly forty years. Forcibly evicted, she came out bare hand, crying. The government did not think it necessary to wait for the final verdict on that issue which was pending in the Appellate Division. In our minds, the image of Suu Kyi coming out of her confinement beaming with smile was in sharp contrast to that of Khaleda Zia breaking into tears while relating the brutal way she was evicted. I wonder how long it will take us to think positive, talk positive and work positive. On e-mail
