Shahrukh Khan's visit to Bangladesh

Nurus Sakib, Segunbagicha, Dhaka
There's been a lot of hullabaloo over Shahrukh Khan's trip to Bangladesh There was something that annoyed me. Why did those Indian dancers wear such dresses that are considered improper in our country? Also, some of the gestures of the performers were indecent. To me, this show only reveals our one-sided cultural relationship with India. I bet there is no one in our country who can get this much attention if s/he performs in our neighbouring country. I was incensed at how we could spend the huge amount of money to see this show, when our own artists do not have money to go abroad for better treatment! We should change our mindset. Up until now, we admired foreign artists more than our own. Now, we should admire our own artists and culture. ------------------------------------------------------- Dhaka welcomed the 'King of Bollywood' Shahrukh Khan on December 10 in the Army Stadium. Countless die-hard fans of the 'Bollywood King ' waited to have a glimpse of their favourite 'hero', who had so far watched Khan's charismatic performance on TV and didn't want to miss the opportunity to see him perform live in Dhaka. Coming to a predominantly Muslim country, Khan's party should have been aware of its cultural mood and should have maintained some limit in the area of entertainment. Not only from the religious point of view but also from the point of a pure sense of entertainment, the dancing and singing that took place in the Army Stadium could not be enjoyed by many. It is surprising how anybody could arrange such a show. According to the audience the performance was odd and disgusting. Cultural shows must reflect the existing culture and heritage of a particular society, keeping in mind other's beliefs and values. In future, sponsors and organisers of such cultural shows must keep the whole gamut of national feeling in mind. Muhammed Elias
