Safe work environment

The RMG sector of Bangladesh has become a prominent player in the economy within a short period of time. The industry has contributed to export earnings, foreign exchange earnings, employment creation, poverty alleviation and the empowerment of women. During the last fiscal year, this sector's total export was worth $9.2 billion. In the context of Bangladesh's total export, RMG sector's contribution is approximately 76%. But this sector has been heavily criticised because of the poor working conditions. Artificial lighting and poor natural lighting condition produce an intolerably hot work environment in most garment factories. In our country there is no consideration about the design which is very important. On the other hand, like many other developing countries, occupational health is still a neglected area in Bangladesh. A very few industry managements are concerned about the work place environment and the workers' health. They do not pay any attention to the work place injuries and sicknesses. The workers bear the sole responsibility of their health and safety. To ensure sustainable economic and social development, the factory owners and managements must take responsibilities. Any development will be meaningless if the poor workers do not have any share of it.
