Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said it is not good to put extra burden of books on the children restricting their mental growth. Hasina asked the teachers and guardians to seek a way to lessen the weight of schoolbags from the shoulders of the little ones. “Don't hinder the mental growth of the children by putting heavy burden of books on the children,” she said while inaugurating the National Primary Education Week 2011 at a function at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city. Primary and Mass Education Ministry organised the function with Minister Dr M Afsarul Ameen in the chair. State Minister for Primary and Mass Education M Motahar Hossain spoke as the special guest. Hasina said to become a good human being it is necessary for the children to have sports, cultural activities and get knowledge about different issues at home and abroad. She said in the recent times an unholy competition is going on among the mothers of the children. “I'm extremely sorry to say that the mothers of the children are excessively concerned about their children's study and put huge pressure on them.” Due to extra pressure of study on the students, the children are not allowed to go out for sports and cultural activities, she said, adding that this is very bad for the mental growth of a human being. Hasina said there should be a place for sports in every educational institution. She asked the mothers to refrain from competition and stop putting unnecessary pressure on their children. The PM also urged the parents to remain alert about drug addiction. “This is very dangerous that our children sometimes get addicted to drugs,” she said. She was highly critical of those parents who hardly look after their children properly. “You can give whatever they (children) want as you earn huge money. But one day you might find your adored son or daughter addicted to drugs if you don't look after them properly,” she said. In this connection, Hasina said to create a beautiful society her government has made it mandatory in the new National Education Policy to have religious education. Later, she distributed prizes among the winners of various competitions organised for the National Primary Education Week and witnessed a colorful cultural function.
