Chandpur municipal elections stayed
The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a High Court (HC) order that stayed the process of holding Chandpur municipality election scheduled for January 27.
In response to a writ petition, the HC on December 12 last year stayed for three months the process of holding election to the municipality on grounds of anomalies in its voter-list.
The HC also issued a rule upon the election commission to explain why the election schedule of the municipality should not be declared illegal.
Chamber judge of the Appellate Division on December 20 stayed the HC order of stay following an application filed by Shafiqur Rahman Bhuiyan, a mayoral candidate in the election.
The three-member bench of Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque, yesterday also directed the HC to dispose of the rule on hearing by January 31.
The apex court passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Manjurul Islam, a voter of the municipality and also the writ petitioner, for vacating the chamber judge's order.
Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam, a counsel for Monjorul told the Daily Star that the election to the Chandpur municipality would not be held until disposal of the HC rule.
Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru assisted Amir-Ul Islam, while Barrister Fida M Kamal argued for Shafiqur Rahman.
