Charghat Municipal Polls
Housewife in spotlight
Let alone contesting any election housewife Nargis Khatun did not think of politics even two months ago, but she turned a leading figure in Charghat municipality.
Nargis, the lone female mayoral candidate in today's municipality elections in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, is now in the limelight for her convincing approach to voters.
Wife of local Awami League leader Rahenul Haq, Nargis said she runs in the polls not because of her husband's legacy, but for the demand of the voters and local AL leaders and activists.
“Education of my two sons was the only concern of my life prior to the announcement of my candidature last month, but it was love and respect of the people that brought me in the election race.”
Nargis told The Daily Star at her house on Monday night that she faced lots of criticism from the rival candidates during the last one month of campaign, but she did not give in to that.
“I told them the prime minister is also a woman who runs the entire country while my responsibility will be a small municipality,” said Nargis, a graduate who showed no wealth in her affidavit.
She launched the campaign marathon day and night to reach every voter in the municipality and tried to convince them in an unlike fashion.
“When all the candidates are giving numerous promises, I just told my voters that I will try to do something good for them if elected,” said Nargis.
Dilapidated roads, lack of drinking water, and unemployment are the main problems in Charghat municipality.
“I along with the locals will first ensure drinking water for all and then will try to improve road communication,” she said.
Elated by his wife's popularity, Rahenul said the voters have weighted behind Nargis as both the present mayor and the MP failed to keep their election pledges.
The other mayoral candidates in the municipality are AL rebel candidate Mohammad Akhteruzzaman, BNP nominated Yunus Ali Talukder, and incumbent Mayor Zakirul Islam Bipul.
