Tk 38 lakh looted from Ctg factory

Unidentified burglars stole around Tk 38 lakh in cash breaking open the vault of a textile factory office in Chittagong city early yesterday. Police said the robbery took place somewhen on Monday night or in the wee hours of yesterday at Base Textile Ltd in Kalurghat Industrial area. Assistant Manager (admin) of the factory, Uttam Das Gupta, said the officials had left locked all the rooms of the five-storey building around 8:00pm on Monday. The cleaners found broken the doors of the record room where the vault was kept and the adjoining account room and the windowpanes of IT room on third floor yesterday morning, he said. Officer-in-charge Omar Faruk of Chandgaon Police Station said the burglars entered the IT room breaking the windowpanes, and then the adjoining account section, and finally the record room. Uttam said around one crore taka was withdrawn from a bank on Monday to pay the salaries of the staff. After paying some on that day, the rest of the money was kept at the vault, he added. Shahadat Hossain, one of the three owners of the factory, claimed it was a premeditated burglary. Amena Begum, deputy commissioner (DC) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) north zone, visited the spot.
