War crimes trial not motivated at all
Dipu Moni tells US envoy
Foreign Minister Dipu Moni yesterday made it clear to the visiting US envoy Stephen J Rapp that the move to try war criminals was in no way politically motivated.
“The issue of 'war crime' is a matter so close to the heart of Bangladeshi people. This was one of the election pledges of the government as well,” she said.
“The Awami League government got this mandate to do justice for the atrocity done during the war of our independence.”
Dipu Moni told Stephen J Rapp, US Ambassador-at-Large for War Crime Issues, that the trial would conform to the international standard. Rapp called on the foreign ministry yesterday afternoon.
Bangladesh has undertaken war crimes trial by popular demand, said the minister, emphasising that the trial is by no means motivated by any political consideration.
Greeting the US Ambassador for his visit, Dipu Moni asked for the assistance of US government through Ambassador Rapp to help Bangladesh government bring the war criminals to justice.
The minister said Rapp's visit to Bangladesh and his meeting with a number of officials and concerned persons would contribute to better understanding of the war crime issues in Bangladesh.
Following the meeting, Ambassador Rapp said it is important to ensure rights of the victims and rights of the accused persons.
The US diplomat also called on Foreign Secretary Mohamed Mijarul Quayes.
