Supreme Court yesterday cleared the way for holding Narsingdi municipal election, scheduled for January 17. A bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque stayed a HC order that, on January 11, stayed the election process for 15 days. The apex court stayed the HC order till disposal of its rule that had also asked the election commission and government to explain why candidature of Lokman Hossain, a mayoral candidate, should not be declared illegal. The Appellate Division passed the order following a petition filed by Lokman Hossain against the HC order. In response to a writ petition filed by another mayoral candidate Abdul Matin Sarker, the HC on January 11 asked Lokman to appear before the court within seven days to prove whether he is a fugitive.
