The Daily Star's 20th founding anniversary: Celebrations countrywide

The largest circulated English daily, The Daily Star, yesterday celebrated its 20th founding anniversary through an array of programmes across the country with the promise to keep up practicing journalism without fear and favour in the years to follow. Speakers at the nationwide programmes lauded the newspaper's contribution to the country's journalism, which they say maintains impartiality, ethics, accuracy, and objectivity. They hope that the internationally recognised Bangladeshi daily would continue its efforts for larger contribution in future. The Daily Star achieved highest popularity among other English dailies in the country for its ethical standard, they said. The speakers and participants also called for The Daily Star authorities to publish news in a more understandable language and avoid complex words so that it can benefit more readers, especially the students. The English daily has made radical change in journalism for gaining people's confidence, they said, adding that it has also come closer to the common people, in joy and sorrow, in the last two decades. The Daily Star's district offices yesterday organised discussions, colourful processions, cultural programmes, competitions, and campaigns to mark the daily's 20th birthday. It was also observed by cutting cakes and distributing sweetmeats. Our Brahmanbaria correspondent reports that a procession was brought out in the district town. Brahmanbaria ADC (Education and Development) Md Khalilur Rahman headed the parade as the chief guest. Following a discussion, the ADC distributed winter clothes among the poor in observance of the anniversary. A debate competition was also held. Our Tangail correspondent says The Daily Star Readers' Club in the district headquarters organised a daylong campaign to vote for the Sundarbans. Cross section of people cast their votes at several points set up by the club. A discussion was also organised there. Tangail Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Bazlul Karim Chowdhury and Superintendent of Police (SP) Mizanur Rahman jointly inaugurated the programmes and addressed the discussion. Al Yasa Iffat who secured the first place in the country's primary terminal examination this year cut a 20-pound cake along with the guests to mark the day. In the port city, former mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury inaugurated the anniversary programmes releasing balloons on Chittagong Press Club premises. A colourful procession followed the inauguration, which marched through the city streets. Bureau Chief Raisul Huq Bahar of The Daily Star's Chittagong office cut an anniversary cake. The Daily Star offices in Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Chapainawabganj, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Pabna, Nilphamari, Manikganj, Khulna, Jhenidah, Rangamati, and Gaibandha also organised different programmes including processions and discussions. At a Chapainawabganj discussion, speakers urged the media to publish more informative stories on the War of Liberation. They also demanded trial of the war criminals. A cultural programme followed the discussion. The Daily Star's Rajshahi office arranged a street drama alongside a procession to mark the anniversary. In Dinajpur, Additional District Magistrate Zakir Hossain participated in a procession followed by a discussion. Speakers there urged The Daily Star to unceasingly publish impartial news. Sweetmeats were distributed among the people too. Our Nilphamari correspondent reports: the district office cut a cake on The Daily Star's birthday. It also held a discussion where speakers urged the newspaper to continue its practice of fair journalism. At a Rangamati discussion, speakers urged journalists to refrain from unfair practice. They stressed that The Daily Star got popularity for maintaining ethics. A procession preceded the discussion. Our Gaibandha correspondent says a procession followed by a discussion was brought out in the district town. The discussants said The Daily Star has contributed a great deal for the welfare of people and for the country's political changeover in the last two decades as well.
