Eight killed in road accidents

Eight people were killed and 46 others injured in road accidents in Dhaka city, Sylhet, Manikganj, and Chapainawabganj yesterday and Friday. Our staff correspondent reports: A rickshaw puller was killed and an unidentified bicycle rider injured as a bus hit their vehicles at Babubazar Bridge of Bangshal in the city yesterday. Mohammad Sadek Fakir, 45, of South Keraniganj was declared dead at Mitford Hospital where the injured was under treatment. Police said Dhaka-bound Mahanagahar Paribahan crashed into the two vehicles after losing control. The bus driver Babul Khalashi, 38, was arrested. A UNB from Sylhet says: Four people including a university student were killed and five others injured as a truck rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Sylhet-Airport road in Lakkatura Tea Estate area in the district Friday. Dead are Alim Uddin, 25, a student of Shahjalal Science and Technology University and son of Abdur Rab of Goainghat; Sukanta Sarkar, 40, an NGO official and resident of Baniachang of Habiganj; Tajul Islam, 35, of Dakkhin Surma; and Tazuddin, 19, of Jakiganj of Sylhet. Witnesses said Sukanta died on the spot and three others at Osmani Medical College Hospital. Two of the injured admitted at the hospital were in critical condition. Another UNB report from Manikganj adds: A bus driver and a passenger were killed and 40 others injured as the bus plunged into the roadside ditch due to dense fog at Baniajuri bus stand in Ghior of the district yesterday. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. The injured were taken to Manikganj sadar hospital and Munnu General Hospital. Our Chapainawabganj correspondent reports: A bicyclist was killed after being hit by a truck at Octroy More in the district town yesterday. Kohinoor Haque, 55, of Masjid Para in the town, was declared dead at Chapainawabganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital.
