A 40-year-old should have no juvenile excuses

I know many people who completely agree with the comments made by Lt Col (Retd) Akbar Hussain in a daily recently. My New Year wish is that both leaders and their subordinates act in the better interests of Bangladesh and less for themselves. Listing the achievements of 2010, the writer gives special mention to the Bangladesh cricket team for their inspiring win, Musa Ibrahim for his phenomenal conquest of Mount Everest and Sir Frank Peters for his role in abolishing corporal punishment from our schools. Now that we are heading into our 40th year as a nation, isn't it time we all grew up and stopped making excuses? Isn't it time we said a decisive 'NO' to poverty, graft and corruption, acid-throwing, eve-teasing, land-grabbing and all the other thousand-and-one disgraceful ailments that hold this nation and its people back? Isn't it time our politicians spent less time feathering their own nests, and served the greater interest of the people as honourable politicians would? A 40-year-old should have no juvenile excuses.
