No more punishment, please

We offer our sincere congratulations to the High Court for declaring corporal punishment illegal in all its inhuman forms such as caning, beating, chaining, forced haircut and confinement, in all schools primary, secondary and madrassas. HC described corporal punishment as “a clear violation of children's fundamental rights to life and liberty” and warned teachers. During the successful campaign by Sir Frank Peters to abolish corporal punishment in Bangladesh (for which we sincerely thank him), he pointed out many truths about its long-time horrific effects. He logically answered many questions that we as parents had avoided for decades. When my wife and I read his views last year, it opened our eyes and we started to view the situation differently. We wrote a letter to the headmaster and all teachers for banning corporal punishment. We also told them the length of our boys' hair is a family matter. The result is we now have two happy sons. As the new school year approaches, we urge all parents to write to the headmasters as we did. This will send the message to the teachers that their behaviour is under observation.
