Railway needs a push

In spite of giving repeated commitments, the AL-led government did not take any effective measures for the development of railway sector in its last two years in office. Our policy makers are sitting idly while the neighbouring countries including India are taking various development programmes for improving their railway service, as it is the main dependable means of communication. Our railway carried 5 crore and 30 lac passengers in 2008 which have increased to 8 crore in 2010. But the government seems to be indifferent to this service. The trains don't leave and reach the station in time. Sometimes fatal accidents occur. The authorities have identified shortage of manpower and coach- engine problem as reasons behind this situation. Without making further delay, the government should take urgent steps for the development of the railway. Besides, the government should establish a separate Railway ministry for ensuring its modernisation and providing quality service to the travellers.
