Peoples Jute Mill in Khulna will be officially renamed as Khalishpur Jute Mill today. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate the name today at noon, said Khulna District Administration sources. The mill workers forwarded the renaming proposal to Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddique at a meeting on February 25. The minister placed it before the prime minister who later accepted, said the mill's Project Director Molla Alamgir. The mill, established on 72 acres of land in 1952, was nationalised under Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) in 1972. On July 31, 2007, the mill was closed down for being a losing enterprise, said Mollah. During the last caretaker government, it was privatised and leased out to Messers Kazi Firms under certain terms and conditions but was handed back to BJMC on July 2009 reportedly incurring a loss of over Tk 18 crore, he said. The present government initiated to reopen the mill, going into test production from November 2010, he added.
