Some distinguished personalities in the port city yesterday threatened to launch a massive movement if the government does not overturn its decision to remove Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus from Grameen Bank. Noted physician Dr Mainul Islam Mahmud said people of Chittagong will bring the port city to a standstill protesting the government's decision if necessary. In the chair, Mainul was addressing the seminar “Chatgan Bhasha” arranged by Chatgan Bhasa Parishad (Chittagong Language Council) at Chittagong Zilla Parishad auditorium. Hossain Zillur Rahman, former adviser to a caretaker government, was the chief guest. Salauddin Kashem Khan, trustee secretary of AK Khan Foundation; Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed, president of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI); MA Salam, former senior vice president of CCCI; Chittagong Club President SM Abu Taiyab; Prof Jamal Nazrul Islam; and Chatgan Bhasa Parisad vice-president Rana Das Gupta also spoke on the occasion. In another programme in the port city, Professor Emeritus Jamal Nazrul Islam said Dr Yunus deserves more respect from the nation as well as the government for his contribution to the country. Prof Islam was addressing a roundtable on “Grameen Bank, Microcredit, and Dr Muhammad Yunus” organised by pro-BNP organisation Chattagram Unnayon Andolan at CCCI yesterday. Chittagong city BNP president and former minister Ameer Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury was the chief guest at the event chaired by Prof Dr Mahabub Ullah, vice chancellor of International Islamic University of Chittagong (IIUC). Ameer Khasru said Yunus removed all the discredits of Bangladesh through microcredit. He termed the Nobel winner "brand ambassador" of the country.
