Raozan upazila Awami League (AL) leaders yesterday denied the allegation of BNP leaders that Raozan municipality mayor cannot attend his office due to hindrance by the ruling party leaders. They protested the allegation at a press conference at Chittagong Press Club (CPC) and said AL leaders did not obstruct the duty of Raozan mayor. Shafiqul Islam Chowdhury, president of AL Raozan upazila unit, said the mayor resides at his Raozan residence and performs all official activities and joins social programmes from there except attending his office. "If he does not want to go to the corporation office what can we do?" he asked. The AL leader said Raozan mayor intentionally does not attend the office for raising a false allegation against them. "He is accomplishing all official works from his residence." Chittagong (north district) unit BNP leaders, on Saturday, at a press conference at CPC alleged that Raozan mayor Abdullah Al Hasan could not attend his office since taking charge on February 22, as local AL leaders threatened him not to go to office. Shafiqul said that during the tenure of BNP government, the local AL leaders could not even come to his constituency fearing the hoodlums of Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and his brother Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury. The arms cadres of the two brothers killed many AL leaders, crippled them, and set fire to their houses during BNP's tenure between 2001 and 2006, he alleged.
