Election officer seeks security

Bera Upazila Election Officer Shakhawat Hossain yesterday appealed for police protection ahead of the Union Parishad polls due on May 31. His application comes four days after a nephew of Shamsul Haque Tuku, state minister for home, threatened him over cancellation of nomination of one Ayub Ali, a member aspirant of Jatsakini Union Parishad. Police detained Aminul Islam, Tuku's nephew, following the incident but released him soon after saying they “actually” captured him over the licence of his motorbike. Shakhawat Hossain in his appeal yesterday mentioned the Sunday's incident, but did not lodge any complaint in this regard. “The election officer sought sufficient police security. We're alert to the need, and we'll ensure his security ahead of the polls,” said Sheikh Jillur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bera Police Station.
