Environmental activists yesterday urged the government to take strong measures immediately to stop the entry of seasonal fruits contaminated with chemicals into market. They also demanded the government establish a strong monitoring cell to identify the businesspersons who use chemicals to ripen the fruits and bring them to justice. The demands came from a human chain jointly organised by Poribesh Bachao Andolan (Poba), Subandhan Samajik Kalyan, Modern Club and Greenmind Society in front of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University, says a press release. Poba Chairman Abu Naser Khan said the trend of using chemicals in fruits and other foodstuff has reached to an alarming level, which the government should control with effective steps. People are getting sick and being affected in different diseases after taking the adulterated foods, he observed.
