New City BNP Committee
Some leaders not happy
The announcement of the new convening committee of BNP Dhaka city unit created mixed reactions within the party, as some of the committee leaders are not happy with their positions.
Questions arose within the party over some joint conveners and member secretary, as they were totally inactive in party activities after the 1/11 changeover.
BNP high ups declared the committee on Sunday keeping Khoka and Abdus Salam as the committee's convener and member secretary.
Against this backdrop, a few joint conveners did not attend a reception programme for the new committee leaders at the city unit office in Nayapaltan.
Thana and ward level leaders and party workers greeted the leaders while leaders of BNP's front and associate bodies greeted Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
Khoka, Salam and a few other joint conveners were present in the office but a few joint conveners including Salauddin Ahmed and Abu Sayeed Khan did not attend. Sayeed, however, told The Daily Star that he was ill.
Replying to a question, he said many in the committee were not found in party activities after the 1/11 changeover.
Surprisingly, Joint Convener Shamsul Huda, a close aide of Mirza Abbas, visited the office and met Khoka. “Chairperson approved the committee. So we all should accept it,” he told The Daily Star.
Meanwhile, a number of pro-Abbas leaders yesterday met Abbas to discuss about the committee but Abbas did not give any direction in this regard, said party insiders.
BNP could not form the committee in last two and half years due to the longstanding dispute between Khoka and Abbas.
Sources said Abbas earlier proposed party high ups to keep a number of leaders, who were party candidates in different parliamentary seats in last election, in the committee but it was not considered.
