BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday urged the government to introduce food-rationing for low-income groups of people saying the government has failed to control price of essentials ahead of Ramadan. “Skyrocketing prices of essentials before Ramadan has made public life miserable as the prices has gone beyond all limits. Government should introduce rationing system so that lower income groups of people can face the crisis,” he said while addressing a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club in the capital. Jatiyatabadi Rickshaw-van Workers Owners' Coordination Council formed the human-chain protesting the price hike of essential commodities and the government moves making several city streets rickshaw free. The BNP leader said the ruling party had promised the nation in its manifesto before parliamentary election that they would bring down prices of essentials if they come to power. But the government has failed to implement its promise over the last two and a half years, he added. Expressing his support to the demands made by the coordination council, Mirza Alamgir said government did not think about the people of lower income group. “Government should have created alternative jobs for the lower income group before making city streets free from slow moving vehicles like rickshaw.”
