Tortured CMC student dies
A student of Chittagong Medical College (CMC) died yesterday and six others were wounded after overnight torture allegedly by the cadres of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) two days back.
The dead is Abidur Rahman, a BDS fourth year student of the college, while the injured as Yasin Rizvi, Minhaj, Faisal, Obayed and Towfique.
Campus sources said several students, said to be activists of a faction of BCL, recently distanced themselves from the organisation amid growing tension with its another faction, angering their leaders.
BCL cadres allegedly caught Abid and others on Wednesday afternoon while they were coming out of the campus and took them to the students' union office and tortured them overnight.
They were rescued on Thursday morning and sent to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Abid was being moved to Dhaka as his condition deteriorated, but he died on the way at about 8pm yesterday.
Abid's family and classmates alleged that Abid fell to the wrath of BCL cadres as he distanced himself from the student body.
