Help law enforcers fight crime: Sahara

Staff Correspondent, Rajshahi
Home Minister Sahara Khatun here yesterday called upon the people to mount a social movement involving the administration to fight crimes, particularly the illegal trade of drugs. Police and other law enforcement agencies alone are not able to maintain law and order of the country, she said. “Launch a social movement, build social organisations, and involve government officials concerned in the organisations to fight crimes in your respective locality”, she said and instructed the government officials to help people form such social organisations. The home minister was addressing as the chief guest the special law and order meeting at Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office yesterday. She asked people, "You always question why godfathers of criminals are not being arrested, but why don't you question yourselves why we (people) are not helping police arrest them". “They (criminals) are less in numbers and lurking around you. If you help the law enforcers arrest them, criminals, extortionists, and terrorists can't exist in the society”. People always blame police whenever a robbery or a theft takes place at one's house, she said. “But you see, we have a population 16 crore. Do we have a 16 crore policemen to guard everybody's house?” Sahara said if police arrest a drug peddler or user, they are released on bails by courts. “We can't answer the question why criminals accused in grave cases like murders are being released on bail by courts”. “You can say why don't the border guards are not checking entry points of smuggled drugs on the border?, she said, explaining the fact that the border areas are very large, very difficult to reach where the border guards have to perform duties by walking and they are not able to guard all the points.
