AL men beat trainee cops
Followers of a local Awami League leader beat up two police officers as the officers halted a son of the leader for driving motorcycle badly and honked loudly in Panchabati area in the city yesterday evening.
The police men were probationary sub-inspectors--(PSIs) Minhaj Arefin of Puthia Police Station in Rajshahi, and Abdul Malek of Manda Police Station in Naogaon.
Local police, however, negotiated the issue with the AL leader's son and released him on a written bond.
Sub inspector Abdur Razzak of Boalia Police Station negotiated the matter said, the incident occurred around 5:00pm when Atikur Rahman Setu, son of Arman Ali, general secretary of 24 No ward unit of AL, was overtaking a human hauler. The PSIs were travelling by the vehicle to Rajshahi city from Bangladesh Police Academy, Sardah in Rajshahi.
Witnesses and police sources said, there was an altercation between the PSIs and Setu as the police officers stopped Setu for driving badly. Following the altercation, the police officers seized the key of Setu's motorcycle.
On information, Arman Ali along with his followers swooped on the PSIs alleging that they tried to snatch the motorcycle.
At on stage, they dragged the two PSIs to Bosepara Police Station.
Arman Ali claimed that the policemen identified themselves as Rab personnel and beat his son first.
“Local people became angry at the PSIs as they hit my son. Later, I rushed to the spot and took them to the police station saving from mass beating,” he added.
SI Razzak said Setu and the two PSIs signed a bond saying that they have no allegation against each other.
