Road crashes kill 14

Fourteen people were killed and 27 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Chittagong, Mymensingh, Pabna, Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Magura, Jhenidah and Khagrachhari on Monday and yesterday. Staff correspondent reports: Three people, including two minor girls, were killed in separate road accidents in the capital yesterday. The deceased are Sheuli Akhter, 6, Sumaiya Akhter, 7, and an unidentified woman aged about 60 years. Sheuli was killed on the spot when a water-carrying pickup van hit her while she was crossing the road in Chot Bari Beribadh area under Shah Ali Police Station around 10:00am. Sumaiya was crashed under the wheels of a Gabtoli-bound Leguna, human hauler, near city sweepers' colony at Gabtoli Beribadh. Sumaiya's father Md Alam is a sweeper and lives in the sweepers' colony. Following the accident, sweepers put barricade on the road for about half an hour and ransacked four vehicles but the driver of the human hauler fled the scene along with his vehicle. The unidentified woman was critically injured when a bus of Niribili Paribahan hit her while she was crossing the road at Gulshan-1 around 2:30pm. She was taken to Mohakhali Metropalitan Hospital where doctors declared her dead. Our Chittagong correspondent adds: Three people were killed and two injured as a truck rammed a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Rangunia upazila on Monday evening. Police said the truck hit the auto-rickshaw at Azimnagar on the Chittagong-Kaptai road around 6:30pm, leaving its driver Md Azad, 21, dead and four passengers wounded. The injured were admitted to Rangunia Upazila Health Complex from where they were shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated. Mamunul Islam, 26, succumbed to his injuries at the CMCH around 11:30pm on Monday while Jiko, 21, around 7:00am yesterday. Locals caught Abu Taher, driver of the truck, soon after the accident and beat him. The driver was admitted to the upazila health complex under police custody. Our Mymensingh correspondent adds: Two people were killed as a Sherpur-bound pickup van hit an ice-cream van on the Mymensingh-Sherpur road at Godaria in Phulpur upazila yesterday morning. The deceased are ice-cream van puller Abdul Halim, 35, son of late Hasen Ali of Raghunathpur village, and his helper Kazimuddin, 30, son of late Taher Ali of Guptergoan village in the upazila. Kazimuddin died on the spot while Halim succumbed to his injuries at Phulpur Upazila Health Complex. Police seized the pickup van but its driver went into hiding. Our Pabna correspondent says: A man was killed and three others were injured as a Pabna-bound microbus hit a passenger-loaded three-wheeler on the Pabna-Dhaka highway in Ganguhati club area yesterday. The deceased is Md Majnu Miah, 30, of village Ganguhati in Sadar upazila. The injured were admitted to Pabna Medical College Hospital. Our Dinajpur correspondent adds: At least six people were wounded when a battery-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a Hili-bound bus near T & T Para at Pachbibi upazila of Joypurhat on Monday night. The wounded passengers of the auto rickshaw were admitted to Joypurhat Modern Hospital. Our Gaibandha correspondent adds: A old man was killed and two motorcycle riders were injuried when the motorcycle hit him while he was crossing the road at Kholabari in Sadullapur upazila yesterday. The deceased is Afseruddin, 60, of village Salaipur of the upazila. Our Magura correspondent says: Two people, including a housewife, were killed and two others injured in separate road accidents in Malainagar area and Bhiripara Bus Stand area yesterday. The deceased are Chaitanya Biswas, 48, of Matikata village, of Sreepur upazila and Hena Begum, 50, wife of Saiful Islam, of village Baroipara in the same upazila. Chaitanya was killed on the spot when a human hauler hit him while he was crossing the Wapda Square-Langaband road in Malainagar area. Hena was killed and her son and grandchild were injured when she along with her grand child fell down from a speeding motorbike while her son Rabiul lost his control over the vehicle and hit a nosimon, locally made three-wheeler, on the Sreepur-Shailakupa road in Bahiripara Bus Stand area in Sreepur upazila. The injured Rabiul and his son, Tanvir, 8, were admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital. Our Jhenidah correspondent adds: A schoolboy was crashed under the wheels of a cattle-loaded truck while he was crossing the Kotchandpur-Kaliganj highway at Kaliganj Nuton Bazar in Kaliganj upazila. The deceased is Shakil Ahmed, 10, son of Md Kawsar Ali, of Shindah-Alaipur village of the upazila. He was a student of class four of Shindah-Alaipur Registered Primary School. Our Khagrachhari correspondent says: A man was killed and 12 others were injured as a bus lost its control and overturned in Alutila area of Sadar upazila yesterday. The deceased is Motilal Tripura, 30, son of Monindra Tripura of Baghaichhari upazila in Rangamati. The injured were admitted to Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital.
