Three held for cheating
Police arrested three people from the capital on Monday on charge of disguising themselves as customs officials and deceiving people.
In the drive led by Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Detective Branch (DB), police also recovered Tk.8.60 lakh from the frauds.
The arrestees were Md Sheikh Alam, 42, Mohammad Nurul Alam Siddique, 23, and Mohammad Nurul Haque, 55.
CMP DB Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Aziz Ahmed said the arrestees introduced themselves as customs officials to a businessman Rabiul Islam of Dhaka.
Telling that they could help him purchase a car from the port at a low price, they took Rabiul to the Chittagong Port on September 13 and took Tk.14 lakh from him as advance car money and fled the scene, the SI said.
Same day, Rabiul informed the incident to Bandar Police Station there, he said.
Port employees might be helping the group, to which the arrestees belong, in such crimes, he said.
