Buses run over, kill 3

Three people were killed after being run over by passenger buses in separate incidents at Mirpur, Gabtoli and Jurain in the city yesterday. Coworkers of one of the deceased, who is a garment worker, vandalised at least 10 vehicles and blocked Mirpur road for at least two-and-a-half hours. The first incident occurred around 7:45am when a bus of Shikor Paribahan ran over Rabu Begum, 30, a garment worker of Akik Apparels Limited of West Kafrul in Taltola and a resident of Taltola Borobari area. Her coworker Ranu Khandoker, who was crossing the road with Rabu, said the victim died on the spot while the bus driver ditched the vehicle and fled. As news spread, over 300 of her agitating coworkers began vandalising vehicles and blocked the road. They removed the blockade around 10:15am after police assured of negotiating compensation for Rabu's family from the factory and arresting the driver, said police. In the second incident, Sayed Taiyeb Ali, 35, a driver of Bengal Paribahan, was run over while crossing a road near Gabtoli Police Box around 6:00am. Locals admitted him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he died around 11:00am, said police. The last victim, Mohammad Sumon, 17, a helper of Super Jhilik bus of Dhaka-Munshiganj route, died on the spot after being run over on a road at Jurain around 7:30am, said police.
