NCC polls fair, peaceful

Apart from some scattered incidents, the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls were held in a fair and peaceful manner, noted different election observers and social organisations in separate statements yesterday. Brotee, a non-government organisation, observed that 70 to 72 percent of the total votes were cast in the polls. Although there were some allegations of fake votes, no information of violence or vote rigging was found. But the illiterate and elderly voters had some difficulties in casting vote, said Brotee. Democracywatch said though the election was held peacefully, some factors like election boycott by a candidate, faulty voting management and absence of polling agents retarded the pace of the electoral process. It observed that the presence of voters was low and most voters used transportation arranged by the candidates to come to the polling centres and return home. The law and order situation was satisfactory and a sufficient numbers of law enforcers were seen on duty, it added. Leaders of Shamprodayikota-Jongibad Birodhi Mancha, a social organisation, thanked all stakeholders and said the free and fair NCC election would accelerate the country's democratic progress in future.
