Indian home minister lauds Hasina govt
Indian Home Minister Panaiappan Chidambaram yesterday said the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh extended “splendid cooperation” in apprehending Indian insurgents.
“If there are any terrorist groups in Bangladesh, I am sure Bangladesh government will act against them. We are in discussion with Bangladesh regarding the Indian insurgent groups taking shelter in Bangladesh,” he told reporters here.
Earlier yesterday, India's Border Security Force (BSF) appreciated the cooperation from Bangladesh government in nabbing Indian insurgents in that country and said infiltration does not appear to be a major issue any more.
To a question about the presence of Indian insurgent groups in Bangladesh and incursion attempts being made at Indo-Bangla border, BSF Director General Raman Srivastava, who retires today, said the Bangladesh government was “actively cooperating” in tackling the matter.
“There are a number of Indian insurgent groups having hide-outs in Bangladesh. The (Indian) Ministry of External Affairs is in touch with Bangladesh and Bangladesh Border Guard.
“Bangladesh government made it very difficult for these Indian insurgents groups to continue to operate from there. Raids are being conducted by them day-in and day-out. Bangladesh is actively cooperating to trace and dislodge them from the camps,” he said.
UK Bansal, secretary (Internal Secretary) in Indian Home Ministry, will take over the charge of the about 2.22 lakh personnel-strong BSF today.
