NCC elections to change political culture: Suranjit
The victory of Selina Hayat Ivy in the Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls will the change political culture of Bangladesh, said Awami League (AL) lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta yesterday.
“It will add a new dimension to politics,” he told a discussion at Dhaka Reporters' Unity.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote organised the discussion marking Jail Killing Day with its General Secretary Tarana Halim MP in the chair.
Suranjit said the young generation has played a pivotal role in the recent movements in the Middle East and in the 2008 national polls in Bangladesh. Now they have played a vital role in Ivy's victory.
Ivy, vice-president of Narayanganj city AL, won Sunday's NCC polls defeating AL-backed candidate Shamim Osman.
According to the veteran lawmaker, Ivy's victory is a good lesson for those who think that holding a successful election under a political government is not possible.
“Holding a successful election under a political government is quite possible if the Election Commission is strong enough,” said Suranjit, who is also a member of the AL advisory council..
Suranjit said some "syndicates" in politics had been formed in major political parties and the syndicates often mislead the leadership. But as per the AL constitution, the party has to take the opinion of people at the grassroots level in the matter of backing candidates.
He said the ruling Awami League had to take from the polls the lesson that people would not accept a party decision which ignored their preferred candidates.
The BNP's "politics of escapism" has also been defeated in the NCC polls and it will be defeated the next time as well, he said.
About the trial relating to the jail killing case, he said it should restart as per the law through taking directions from the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
Shah Alam Murad, organising secretary of Dhaka City AL, and Sheikh Jahangir Alam, senior vice president of Krishak League also spoke on the occasion.
