55,373 absent on first day

A total of 55,373 candidates were absent on the first day of Junior School Certificate (JSC) and Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC) examinations yesterday while 28 students were expelled for resorting to unfair means. With girls outnumbering boys, a total of 18,61,113 class-VIII students --15,37,422 from schools and 3,23,691 from madrasas had registered for the exams under eight general education boards and one Madrasa Education Board. Madrasa Board stood highest in terms of number of absent students as well as expelled students on the first day. A total of 16,061 students from this board did not take part in the exam while 26 students were expelled, according to the board's statistics.Of the rest of the absentees, 14,756 are from Dhaka board; 4,196 from Rajshahi; 5,758 from Comilla; 5,198 from Jessore; 3,989 from Chittagong; 2,775 from Dinajpur; 1,675 from Barisal; and 965 from Sylhet board. In the foreign centres, 26 out of 370 examinees were absent. The examinations started at 10:00am at 2,009 centres across the country. Students of general education boards sit for Bangla (1st paper) exam and madrasa students took Bangla Literature exam.
