Sheershanews editor on remand
Ekramul Haq, editor of recently shut online news agency Sheershanews.com, was shown arrested and placed on a five-day remand yesterday in a fresh extortion case.
Habibur Rahman, tax inspector of Tax Inspection Department, filed the case with Ramna Police Station on Tuesday, alleging that Ekramul extorted Tk 5,000 from him on June 12.
The complainant in the case statement said Ekramul went to his Kakrail office on June 12 and demanded Tk 1 lakh each month.
Ekramul threatened that he (Habibur) took Tk 10,000 from each taxpayer for his high officials and reports will be published against him (Habibur) if he failed to pay the monthly extortion, said Habibur, adding that in fear, he paid Ekramul Tk 5,000.
On July 30, Ekramul was arrested in another case for extorting Tk 20 lakh from Gias Uddin Talukdar, a businessman from Chittagong.
On October 25, the High Court granted bail to Ekramul for four months in that case. Accordingly, he was released from the Dhaka Central Jail on Tuesday, but Detective Branch of police re-arrested him at the jail gate in the fresh extortion case.
