Banglalink Issue
Maintain status quo
HC asks BTRC
The High Court yesterday directed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to maintain status quo on operations of Banglalink for three months.
In response to a writ petition, the court also issued a rule upon the BTRC to explain in four weeks why its notice asking Banglalink to pay Tk 2,192.08 crore as its spectrum assignment fee should not be declared illegal.
Counsels for the BTRC and the mobile operator told The Daily Star that BTRC cannot interfere in the operation of Banglalink following the HC order.
The telecoms regulator on October 17 issued the notice on Banglalink for payment of the money as its spectrum assignment fee for 18 years since 2008.
The Banglalink authorities on October 30 filed the writ petition challenging the legality of the notice. The petitioner also prayed to the court to stay the effectiveness of the notice.
The HC bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddiqui and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque passed the order yesterday after holding hearing on the petition.
