Jahur was strangled
Say arrested muggers
“Two of us wrapped a shirt around his neck and pulled at it while the third one sat on his chest so that the suffocation would be faster.”
The horrifyingly graphic description of a murder came yesterday from three arrested muggers, as quoted by police, who admitted to killing Jahur Ahmad, 40, owner of Hotel Golden City at Hathazari in the port city of Chittagong.
Jahur's body was found in the Central Railway Building area on the night of October 30.
Police conducted drives in different parts of the city for three days and arrested the three -- Mohammad Shahabuddin, 30, Md Enam alias Rajib, 26, and Md Rashed, 30, -- residents of Hatia in Noakhali.
Two CNG-run auto-rickshaws were also seized from their possessions.
The three said they had a fourth accomplice, Mohammad Mehraj, 25, of Hatia, who drives around in CNG-run auto-rickshaws and picks up victims.
On the fateful night, Jahur boarded the three-wheeler driven by Mehraj at Muradpur intersection around 8:30pm. On the way to BRTC bus station, Mehraj stopped the vehicle so that Shahabuddin, Enam and Rashed could get in, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Alamgir Hossain of Kotwali Police Station, quoting the arrestees.
They started beating Jahur when he did not give his wallet. At one point Jahur bit Rashed's right hand and started screaming to attract the attention of passers-by. That was when Jahur was strangled, said the OC.
Police recovered Jahir's cell phone from Shahabuddin and Tk 700 from Enam. They are trying to nab Mehraj, he added.
Shahabuddin was earlier arrested twice for mugging but released on bail, two days before the last Eid-ul-Fitr, said the OC.
