7 killed in road accidents

At least seven people including a minor and three women were killed and 18 others injured in separate accidents in Jessore, Dinajpur, Sirajganj, Chapainawabganj and Chittagong yesterday. Four people were killed after a truck rammed a human-hauler in Avaynagar upazila of Jessore yesterday, reports our Benapole correspondent. Among the deceased were the human-hauler driver Ripon Hossain, 25, and its three passengers Rubi Begum, 30, Sheuli Begum, 25, and Renu Begum 27, all workers of Sidor Textile Mills at Nawapara. Ahsan Habib, officer-in-charge (OC) of Avaynagar Police Station, said a sand-laden truck hit the human-hauler near Chennutia on Jessore-Khulna highway around 5:30am. Ripon and Rubi died on the spot while Sheuli and Renu succumbed to their injuries on the way to Avaynagar Upazila Health Complex, the OC said. Our Dinajpur correspondent reports, a speeding microbus hit a minor boy when he was crossing the Bochaganj-Dinajpur road in the district's Bochaganj upazila around 2:00pm yesterday, said police quoting witnesses. The victim was five-year-old Jibon, son of Arman Ali of the upazila's Madhabpur village. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital. A correspondent from Sirajganj reports, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a Leguna (locally made tempo) coming in the opposite direction on Ullapara-Mohonpur road at Charpara village in the district's Ullapara upazila yesterday. Police said the accident left Shahadat Hossain, 15, of the upazila's Koira village, spot dead. Three others injured were rushed to Ullapara health complex. Our Chapainawabganj correspondent reports, a microbus rammed a motorcycle at Ranihati College intersection in the district's Shibgonj upazila around 6:30pm on Wednesday. Shibgonj police and witnesses said the accident left the motorcyclist and one of his co-riders injured and another co-rider dead. The deceased, Latifur Rahman, 15, son of Asadul Islam of Kamlakantapur village, was a Dakhil examinee of Chhatrajitpur Madrasa. Locals rushed the victims to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital where duty doctors declared Latifur dead. The motorcyclist was later sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Police seized the microbus and arrested its driver. A case was lodged in this connection. Our Chittagong correspondent reports, at least 13 workers of KDS Garments Factory in the port city were seriously injured after the bus carrying them hit a road divider at Shah Amanat Bridge around 7:30am yesterday. Bakalia police said the bus driver was speeding and lost control, hitting the divider. The driver, however, managed to flee the scene. Locals rushed the injured to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where they are taking treatment in the causality department, said police.
