The Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) yesterday chopped down a century-old tree and has decided to fell another in Pahartali Haji camp area to widen a road. CDA executive engineer Mahfujur Rahman said it was impossible to avoid cutting down the two trees, one teak and another rain tree, as the tree roots would hamper the expansion. The organisation started constructing the 4.5-kilometre Dhaka Trunk Road between Dewanhat and Alongkar intersections early this October. “We will remove all the obstacles such as trees, electric poles, and any structures, which fall within 62-feet-width of the road", Rahman said. Though these two trees are centuryold, the Department of Environment (DoE), Chittagong was not informed of the tree felling, said Jafor Alam, director, DoE, Chittagong.
