PM invited to Calcutta University convocation
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been invited by Calcutta University to address its convocation, top sources in the university said Sunday night.
The university's convocation is usually held every December, but this year it would be held as per the convenience of Hasina, they said, adding that dates suiting the Bangladesh premier were being worked out.
Paschimbanga state government headed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has cleared the proposal to invite Hasina to the convocation, and the invitation to her has already been sent by the university vice-chancellor, the sources said.
A separate invite to Hasina for the same was being sent to her also by the university's chancellor who also happens to the governor of the state. MK Narayanan, India's former national security adviser, is at present the governor and ex-officio chancellor of the university.
If Hasina accepts the invitation to address the convocation of the prestigious university and visits Kolkata, it is expected to provide her an opportunity to meet Mamata against the backdrop of the controversy of the botched agreement on Teesta river water-sharing.
Mamata is also expected to be present at the convocation, the sources said.
