Arrest of Khokon

BNP calls two-day demonstration

Staff Correspondent
The main opposition BNP yesterday declared a two-day demonstration demanding release of BNP Education Affairs Secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon, also BNP Narsingdi district unit president. Jatiyatabadi Swechhchasebak Dal, a front body of BNP, will stage a demonstration in front of BNP central office in the city's Nayapaltan tomorrow while BNP will do so on Saturday. BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir declared the programme yesterday while addressing a press briefing at the office. “Family member of the slain mayor Lokman filed cases against a number of influential ruling party men including a minister's brother but the government arrested a BNP leader. It cannot be acceptable,” said Mirza Alamgir. He said even the local Awami League and Bangladesh Chhatra League units pointed their fingers at the same party men. Narsingdi police arrested Khokon from his residence in the capital's Khilgaon area around 2:50am on November 2, just hours after the assassination of Narsingdi mayor Lokman Hossain in front of the district Awami League office. However, a Narsingdi court yesterday cleared Khokon from his suspected involvement in the murder. Replying to a query, Mirza Alamgir said he met BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman during his recent visit to London but did not disclose what they talked about. He also protested a statement made by Finance Minister AMA Muhith yesterday when the latter said the price of CNG would increase.
