Noor Hossain Day today

Today is the historic Shaheed Noor Hossain Day, marking the killing of a young pro-democracy activist who was demanding an end to the then autocratic regime of Hussain Muhammad Ershad. On November 10 of 1987, Noor Hossain was gunned down by police at Zero Point of Gulistan in the city while participating in a procession of 15-party alliance led by Awami League against Ershad's regime. Different political and socio-cultural organisations will observe the day in memory of Noor Hossain who has become the symbol of democracy. Noor Hossain had a slogan “Swairachar Nipat Jak, Ganotantro Mukti Pak” (Down with autocracy, let democracy be freed) inscribed in white paint on his chest and back when the bullet took his life. President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages on the occasion. Meanwhile, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, in a press release, demanded identification and trial of the killers of Noor Hossain.
