The main opposition BNP, now on a movement demanding mainly the restoration of the caretaker government system, yesterday said the caretaker government is not a dead issue at all. “It's (CG issue) still very much alive”, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, responding to the ruling party leaders' frequent remarks that the caretaker government has been a dead issue since the 15th Amendment to the Constitution. Fakhrul made the remark while presiding over a rally in front of the BNP central office organised by the party demanding immediate release of BNP's education affairs secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon by today and protesting the price hike of fuels. He said people would not allow holding any election in the country unless it is arranged under a non-party caretaker government. Leaders of BNP and its front organisations at the rally raised the demand for launching a one-point movement -- "oust the government". Fakhrul said the one-point movement has already started. The way people extended their spontaneous support and participated in the recent road march led by Khaleda Zia showed that the day for the fall of this "oppressive" government is not far away, he said. Referring to Awami League presidium member Obaidul Qader's remarks on Friday, Fakhrul said he wants to thank the AL leader for his correct assessment that the government is trying to cover up the truth over the killing of Narsingdi municipality mayor Lokman Hossain. He also thanked the AL leader for his remark about the finance minister's rhetoric.
