Senior Awami League lawmaker Suranjit Sengupta yesterday said the government system and cabinet need to be "re-evaluated" to meet the expectations of the party supporters, voters, and common people of the country. The advisory council member of AL made the remarks at a discussion organised by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote in Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium. “We think there is no alternative to (Prime Minister) Sheikh Hasina's leadership to eradicate crisis from Bangladesh”, he said. “A lot of the party activists and leaders have sacrificed their lives to bring Awami League back to power. But many achievements of the government are fading away because of some unwanted incidents”, said the veteran parliamentarian. On the recent killing of Narsingdi mayor Lokman Hossain, Suranjit said he would refrain from making any remarks on the incident as the investigation is underway. He also advised the party's other leaders to abstain from making any comment on the sensational murder, which triggered huge anger among the Narsingdi people. He said some of his friends, colleagues as well as different quarters were making comments on the suspect involved in the killing, which would influence the ongoing investigation. Unidentified miscreants shot dead Lokman Hossain, popular mayor of Narsingdi municipality and AL leader, in front of the district AL office on November 1. The murder sparked waves of protest among the people of Narsingdi. Family members and many locals pointed the finger at Posts and Telecommunications Minister Rajiuddin Raju and his brother Salauddin Ahmed that they were behind the assassination. People reacted sharply after a ruling AL lawmaker Nazrul Islam from Narsingdi on Thursday commented that Salauddin Ahmed, the prime accused in the murder case, might not have been involved in the killing.
