14 killed, 72 hurt in road crashes
Fourteen people, including three Union Parishad (UP) members, were killed and at least 72 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Chittagong, Dinajpur, Faridpur, Sirajganj and Brahmanbaria from early Friday to yesterday.
Our staff correspondent reports: A rickshaw-van puller was killed and at least 46 people sustained injuries in two road accidents at different parts of the city yesterday.
Police said the unidentified victim, aged around 35, died after a speeding truck hit his rickshaw-van in front of Rajob Ali Market at Gabtoli. He was rushed to Pongu Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead around 12:30am.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Paltan Police Station Shahidul Haq said a truck hit a Gazipur bound bus from Sadarghat, Suprovat Paribahan, at Paltan intersection around 4:00am. The bus turned upside down leaving at least 26 people injured.
A police constable Lokman Hossain also sustained injuries in the accident, the OC said, adding that they arrested the truck driver Selim Hossain, 35, at the spot and seized both the vehicles.
New Market Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Safiul Haq Mondol said a Gabtoli bound bus and a minibus collided at Katabon intersection around 6:30 am. The bus crashed into an ATM booth leaving at least 20 passengers of both of the buses injured. Driver of the bus Jahangir, 40, was also injured.
Our staff correspondent from Chittagong reports: A woman identified as Taslima Akter, 25, was killed and his husband Mostak Ahmed was injured when an unidentified vehicle rammed their motorcycle at customs house intersection of the port city on Friday night.
Bandar Police SI Jakir Hossain said the victims were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the women died around 1:30pm.
The accident occurred while they were coming from naval base at around 8:30pm, the SI added.
Our Dinajpur correspondent says: Four people, including three UP members, were killed in two separate road accidents in the district on Saturday.
The deceased are Rabbi, 8, son of Abdur Rahman, of Shitlai village of Birganj upazila and Shasra UP members Rabiul Islam, 30, son of Md Abdul of Khodmadhabpur village, Nobeda Begum, 50, wife of late Motaleb Hossain of Parajpur village and Jobeda Begum, wife of Sadeque Ali.
Quoting witnesses, police said a Birganj bound microbus crashed the minor boy at Amtoli village while he was crossing Birganj-Pirganj road around yesterday.
The police detained the microbus.
In another accident, a speeding Dinajpur bound truck rammed a motorcycle carrying the three UP members at Bhabainagar on Dinajpur-Phulbari Highway killing them on the spot around 1:50pm yesterday.
Police said Rabibul was driving the motorcycle while the two others were on the back seats.
The bodies were sent to Dinajpur Medical College morgue for autopsy.
UNB adds: Two people were killed and 10 others injured in separate road crashes in Sadar upazila near Faridpur town yesterday.
A speeding truck knocked down motorcyclist Kayes, 28, leaving him dead on the spot at Pashchimkhabaspur on Dhaka-Khulna Highway in front of Niramoy Hospital of the town.
Kayes was on way to his village residence at Bilnalia in Sadar upazila when he met the fatal accident.
In another accident, a speeding bus collided head-on with a private car instantly killing the car driver, injuring 10 others in Chandra Digholia area on Faridpur-Barisal road in Sadar upazila yesterday morning.
Identity of the deceased could not be gathered immediately.
In Sirajganj, three people were killed and nine others injured in separate road accidents.
A Nasimon (improvised passenger vehicle) hit a motorcycle, instantly killing its rider Manik, 26, a diploma engineer, and injuring nine Nasimon passengers at Meghai on Kazipur-Sonamukhi road in Kamarkhand at 3:30pm.
The deceased hailed from Meghai village.
A Dhaka-bound bus ran over Bulbul, 7, son of Rafiqul Islam of Baradhul village of Kamarkhand, leaving the boy dead on the spot at Konabari square on Link Road at the west end of Jamuna Bridge yesterday morning.
In separate accident, a speeding truck ran over an unidentified juvenile, aged about 18, instantly killing him at Bogra Bazaar on Bogra-Nagarbari road in Chandaikona area yesterday afternoon.
In Brahmanbaria, a truck from Akhaura rammed an Akhaura bound motorcycle, leaving the bike rider Kibria Chowdhury, 45, and co-rider Manik severely injured at Narayanpur on Dhaka-Agartola road in Akhaura yesterday afternoon.
They were taken to Brahmanbaria Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared Kibria dead. He was ex-secretary of the district Truck Owners Association.
A speeding truck hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw from the town, leaving a woman dead on the spot and five other auto-rickshaw passengers injured at Uchanisa on Sylhet-Comilla road in Sadar upazila yesterday afternoon.
Identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
In separate accident, a motorcyclist was instantly killed as his bike met an accident on Bypass Road in the town in the afternoon. The deceased was identified as Kibria of Purbo Medda of the municipality.
