'Reduce fuel price or face agitation'
Protesting the latest price hike of petroleum products, three organisations yesterday threatened tough agitation programmes unless the prices are decreased.
Leaders of Bangladesh Truck-Covered Van Malik Samity, in an emergency meeting at its central office yesterday, said the freight transportation industry is now under threat due to frequent hikes in fuel prices, says a press release.
Two months past the last hike, the government once again raised prices without discussions with the stakeholders, they said in the meeting chaired by its President Haji Tofazzal Hossain Majumder.
The organisation threatened to unite with other freight transportation associations for tougher agitation programmes unless prices are slashed immediately.
Bangladesh Covered Van Truck Pannya Paribahan Malik Association also held an emergency meeting yesterday protesting the hike, says a press release.
The association leaders said transportation costs would skyrocket with the new hike and threatened to go for an indefinite strike unless fuel prices are deceased immediately.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Juba Moitree yesterday organised a protest rally in front of Jatiya Press Club in the city.
Urging the government to decrease fuel prices as soon as possible, the protestors said the third increase of fuel prices in the same year would increase the sufferings of the masses, says a press release.
The organisation called for nationwide protest rallies and processions on November 16 against this hike.
The government for the second time in two months increased the fuel prices by Tk 5 a litre on Friday to reduce subsidy on imports of petroleum products.
