Huji leader appeals for discharging
A leader of banned militant outfit Harkat-ul-Jihad (Huji) yesterday appealed to a Dhaka court to discharge him of the August 21 grenade attack cases.
Arif Hasan Suman submitted the petition as Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 resumed the seventh day of charge framing hearing against 52 accused in the cases.
Later, Judge Shahed Nuruddin fixed November 17 for the next hearing of the rest five accused who had earlier submitted discharge petitions.
Earlier on November 1, Brig Gen (retd) Abdur Rahim, former director general of National Security Intelligence (NSI), appealed to the court to be discharged from the charges.
On the fifth day of the hearing on October 31, four others accused, including Islamic Democratic Party Ameer Sheikh Abdus Salam, appealed to the court to relive them from the charges.
On October 13, 17 and 23, counsels for former inspector general of police Khoda Baksh Chowdhury, Lt Commander (Retd) Saiful Islam Duke, Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar, and Huji leader Maulana Abu Taher appealed to be discharged.
The prosecution on October 9 placed proposals for framing charges against all the accused.
Thirty-two accused, including Babar and Mojaheed, now in jail custody, were produced before the court yesterday while Ariful Islam Arif, former DCC counsillor, now on bail, was also present.
BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman and 18 others are absconding.
