Call to prevent diabetes
World Diabetes Day was observed yesterday across the country and elsewhere in the world amid various programmes with a call to create awareness about prevention of the disease.
Being imbued with the slogan, "Diabetes kills one person every eight seconds. Act on diabetes, now," different organisations, including Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (Dab) and Birdem, chalked out different programmes marking the day.
The programmes included poster exhibition, leaflet distribution, organising rally at Manik Mia Avenue in the city at 8:30am and free diabetes examining in different areas, including National Museum, New Market and Jatiya Press Club.
A view-exchange meeting between diabetes patients and specialist doctors was held at Birdem at 11:00 am. A discussion meeting was also held at 4:00 pm with Finance Minister AMA Muhith as the chief guest and Dab President AK Azad Khan in the chair.
The minister also inaugurated the Prof Farida Haque Laboratory at the hospital to mark the day.
