Brickfields fined Tk 12 lakh

The Department of Environment (DoE) in a drive yesterday fined two brickfields Tk 12 lakh and closed those for polluting environment in a residential area at Ambag of Konabari in Gazipur. The two brickfields--Ma Bricks and Padma Bricks--had been running without any environmental clearance, says a DoE press release. A DoE enforcement team also seized five lakh bricks, some fuel wood and six moulding machines. In another drive, a mobile court yesterday fined two bottled water companies Tk 1.5 lakh and sealed off the companies for running business without having certificate of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI). A team led by Mohammad Abu Syed, executive magistrate of Dhaka district administration and aided by Rapid Action Battalion and BSTI officials, conducted the drive in the city's Khilgaon area, says a press release. The court fined Hayat Drinking Water of Expect Trading Corporation of Khilgaon Tk 50,000 and Turag Drinking Water of Ujala Enterprise of the same area Tk one lakh.
