Staff Correspondent
The High Court yesterday directed the government to appoint a 24-hour watch in Dhaka water supply and sewerage authority's lagoon in the city's Kadamtoli to stop cultivation, catching and trade of fish there. In response to a writ petition by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, the court also asked the authorities to submit a compliance report to it within seven days. The government was also ordered to form an expert committee to recommend ways in stopping fish cultivation in the lagoon. The recommendation must be submitted to the court in four weeks, said Manzill Murshid, the petitioner's counsel. The HC bench of Justice Farid Ahmed and Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif also issued a rule upon the government to explain in four weeks why it should not be directed to stop cultivation, catching and selling of fish at the lagoon. Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Saju represented the government.
