Ensure treatment for the poor: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the authorities concerned to ensure treatment of poor people in all public hospitals. Hasina gave the directive when a delegation of Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Alumni Trust, led by DMC Principal Prof Deen Mohammad, met her at the Prime Minister's Office yesterday morning. The prime minister noted that it is necessary to set up a medical university in every divisional headquarters of the country for taking the health sector to new heights, said PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad. She mentioned that the government is recruiting doctors, nurses and health assistants, and increasing the number of beds in the government hospitals for beefing up the health services. The physicians recalled that an initial donation of Tk 5 crore by the Prime Minister for the BSMMU to ensure treatment for the poor has now increased to Tk 8 crore. Later, a delegation of Chittagong University, led by Vice Chancellor Prof Anwarul Azim Arif, paid a courtesy call on the prime minister at the PMO. During the meeting, the prime minister said that her government is highly committed to maintaining a congenial academic atmosphere in all educational institutions across the country. Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury was also present on the occasion.
